Author Guidelines for Conquer
General Information
Conquer is the official patient magazine of the Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+) and is intended for people with cancer and their loved ones.
Conquer presents educational articles written by oncology healthcare professionals on all aspects of cancer care, including disease-specific treatments, side-effect management, complementary therapies, nutrition, cancer genetics, and advocacy.
Conquer also features personal stories, artwork, and poetry by people affected by cancer.
To contribute to Conquer, please determine your article type below and use the submission portal to have your paper or artwork considered for publication.

Educational Articles
Authors of educational articles should be healthcare professionals, advocacy leaders, or related experts. Articles should focus on aspects of cancer care such as screening, diagnosis, staging, treatment, genetics, or survivorship issues. Manuscripts submitted to Conquer must be original and not previously published, either in print or online, and should not be under publishing consideration elsewhere.
Manuscript Format
- Submit your article as a double-spaced Word file
- Include a title page that lists the names, titles, and affiliations of all authors1
- Body copy should be no longer than 2000 words
- Number references consecutively in the text using superscript arabic numerals; do not use automatic numbering or endnote features
- Reference list
- Place list following the main text
- Format references according to the AMA Manual of Style, 11th edition2
- List references by number in the order they appear in the text; do not alphabetize
- Cite tables and graphics in the text; save as individual PDF files at end of document
- Please include headshot/photograph of author(s)
- Please provide brief bio on author(s)
All submissions require a signed copyright transfer/authorship form. Educational articles require an author(s) disclosure form.

Essays
We welcome essays from anyone affected by cancer. You do not have to be a professional writer, but manuscripts submitted to Conquer must be original and not previously published, either in print or online. It is our sincere wish to publish as many essays as possible; but please be advised, due to the overwhelming quantity of submissions, we are only able to publish a select few.

Manuscript Format
- Submit your essay as a double-spaced Word file
- Your essay should have a title and list your name exactly as it should publish
- Essay should be no longer than 1500 words
- Please include headshot/photograph of yourself
All submissions require a signed copyright transfer/authorship form.
Art
We welcome artistic creations from anyone affected by cancer. Please submit your painting, drawing, illustration, photograph, or other creation saved as a large image file. If you submit more than 1 image, please save each image as a separate fine. All accepted artworks will be published in print and online. It is our sincere wish to publish as many works of art as possible; but please be advised, due to the overwhelming quantity of submissions, we are only able to publish a select few.
Submission Format
- Submit each work of art as a high-resolution file
- Each work should be titled
- List your name exactly as it should publish
- Please submit a description of the art to include the medium (eg, acrylic on canvas) as well as what this work means to you
- Please include headshot/photograph of yourself
- Please include an artist’s statement of 75 words or less (to include any information you would like to share about yourself)

Poetry
We welcome original poetry submissions from anyone affected by cancer. If poetry submission has been previously published, please obtain and provide proof of permission to reprint. It is our sincere wish to publish as many poetry submissions as possible; but please be advised, due to the overwhelming quantity of submissions, we are only able to publish a select few.

- Please include a writer’s statement of 75 words or less (to include any information you would like to share about yourself)
