Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators
The Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+) is the largest national specialty organization dedicated to improving patient care and quality of life by defining, enhancing, and promoting the role of oncology nurse and patient navigators. Our organization of over 8,900 members was founded in May 2009 to provide a network for all professionals involved and interested in patient navigation and survivorship care services to better manage the complexities of the cancer care treatment continuum for their patients. We view our organization as one consisting of “professional patient advocates” and, to that end, we support and serve our members.
Journal of Oncology Navigation & Survivorship
The Journal of Oncology Navigation & Survivorship (JONS) promotes reliance on evidence-based practices in navigating patients with cancer and their caregivers through diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. JONS also seeks to strengthen the role of nurse and patient navigators in cancer care by serving as a platform for these professionals to disseminate original research findings, exchange best practices, and find support for their growing community.
    The Oncology Nurse-APN/PA

The Many Wonders of Transplant

October 2017 Vol 3 No 5
Amir Steinberg, MD, FACP
Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, New York
Hodgkin lymphoma survivor

It was years ago
At one institution
The program hosted

A transplant reunion
I told my cardiology brother
Wanna to know what he said?!
“Both patients are coming?”
I said, “they’re not all dead!”

We cure a lot of patients
Transplant’s our ammunition
To attack just about
Any condition

Let’s start with leukemias
Each and every type
And lymphomas
Results justify the hype
Myeloma and amyloid

Waldenström too!
It helps plasma-cell disorders
Data show this to be true

We cure a lot of patients
Transplant’s our ammunition
To attack just about
Any condition

Have blood count issues?
A patient with cytopenia?
Transplant can help
MDS and aplastic anemia
Myelofibrosis and
polycythemia vera
Which is known as PV
A transplant can be helpful
It’s easy to see

We cure a lot of patients
Transplant’s our ammunition
To attack just about
Any condition

Thalassemia patients
As well as sickle-cell disease
Have benefits from transplant

Go home critics, please!
Even immunodeficiency disorders
Such as SCID and DiGeorge
Are amenable to transplant
A cure we can forge!

We cure a lot of patients
Transplant’s our ammunition
To attack just about
Any condition

The autoimmune conditions
May respond as well
multiple sclerosis and
scleroderma
Great results we can tell
Investigating other uses
Crohn’s disease for example
The benefits of transplant
An idea you cannot trample!

We cure a lot of patients
Transplant’s our ammunition
To attack just about
Any condition

So to all those doubters
I’ve seen the reality
Many, many survivors
Give transplant clarity
As a treatment of hope
And often cure
I’ll get off my soapbox
My motives are pure

We cure a lot of patients
Transplant’s our ammunition
To attack just about
Any condition

Recently I attended the Broadway show “Hamilton” and enjoyed how the show infused Hip-Hop into the telling of Alexander Hamilton’s life. I have enjoyed listening to the music from the show on CD/iPhone. The style of my poem is inspired by this blending of Hip-Hop into “Hamilton.” The poem extols the virtues of stem-cell transplantation; as a transplant physician, I have found that transplant has helped to cure many of my patients.
