Did You Know? Sarcoma Facts

  • Approximately 30% of skeletal system cancers are chondrosarcomas.
  • Soft-tissue sarcomas rarely cause symptoms in early stages. Because soft-tissue sarcomas can develop in flexible, elastic tissues or deep spaces in the body, the tumors may grow quite large before they cause symptoms.
  • Soft-tissue sarcomas can be difficult to distinguish from other malignancies when they are found within organs, leading experts to believe soft-tissue sarcomas are under-reported.
  • Approximately 50% of soft-tissue sarcomas develop in an arm or leg; 40% develop in the torso or abdomen; and 10% develop in the head or neck.
  • Sarcomas are more commonly diagnosed in children than adults, as they account for approximately 1% of all adult cancers and 15% of all childhood cancers.
