Although brain and spinal cord tumors are rare, the chance of children and the elderly being diagnosed with this disease has risen in recent years in the United States. The overall chance of an adult being diagnosed with a malignant brain or spinal cord tumor in their lifetime is 1%, whereas malignant brain and spinal cord tumors are the second most common cancer in children and young adults.2 Public awareness of the mysterious nature of this disease needs to remain a priority to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with it.
