The Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+) is the largest national specialty organization dedicated to improving patient care and quality of life by defining, enhancing, and promoting the role of oncology nurse and patient navigators. Our organization of over 8,900 members was founded in May 2009 to provide a network for all professionals involved and interested in patient navigation and survivorship care services to better manage the complexities of the cancer care treatment continuum for their patients. We view our organization as one consisting of “professional patient advocates” and, to that end, we support and serve our members.
Journal of Oncology Navigation & Survivorship
The Journal of Oncology Navigation & Survivorship (JONS) promotes reliance on evidence-based practices in navigating patients with cancer and their caregivers through diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. JONS also seeks to strengthen the role of nurse and patient navigators in cancer care by serving as a platform for these professionals to disseminate original research findings, exchange best practices, and find support for their growing community.

Thank You CONQUER Magazine for a Great Article

June 2022 Vol 8 No 3

TO THE EDITOR: I would like to thank you for publishing the article “Multiple Myeloma: Navigating the First 90 Days” by Peg Rummel, RN, MHA, OCN, NE-BC, HON-ONN-CG, in the April 2022 issue of CONQUER magazine.

This is the best information that my husband (who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2018) and I have received about the diagnostics, medications and treatment, and barriers related to a multiple myeloma diagnosis.

This information should be available in every oncology office that treats patients with multiple myeloma and distributed to them after diagnosis in the form of a pamphlet or a flyer. Often, while you are adjusting to the diagnosis of multiple myeloma, you are not aware of what questions you should be asking, or the test results that are important to pay attention to, and why.

Appointments with the cancer care team are filled with information. Anything that can be provided to patients and caregivers in a written form will be helpful as the patient or caregiver navigate this journey. Anything that prompts us to focus on what topics to address, the questions to ask, and the basic information that every patient should know, is most helpful.

Even as a nurse, I am sometimes unsure of the best approach in asking questions or the best way to find information on the many questions that arise. The barriers to care identified in the article include some of the same barriers we have encountered. It has been very helpful for us to know that we are not alone in having to address these barriers to care.

Thank you for this vital information, and thank you for the CONQUER magazine. This publication is most helpful for those of us (patients and caregivers) who need to navigate the cancer journey.
