Women often perceive themselves as nurturers. As nurturing women, we tend to the needs of our families, we care for our friends, we volunteer in our communities, and give selflessly to others. Sometimes, this practice can also mean that we inadvertently place the needs of others before our own and consequently neglect our own health.

A cancer diagnosis is one of the most difficult trials anyone can face in life. In many cases, a diagnosis causes the diagnosed to rethink personal priorities. I want to encourage you to do this—rethink your priorities. I want to encourage you to place your needs and your health first. Allow others to nurture you, even if it goes against the very grain of your being; and most importantly, I want to encourage you to care for yourself. With this sentiment in mind, allow me to welcome you to our inaugural Women’s Health edition of CONQUER: the patient voice™.

This issue has been carefully and specially crafted for you—daughters, sisters, mothers; the women in our lives. In these pages, we will cover important topics for you to consider. Our intention is to provide food for thought that nurtures the soul and ultimately empowers you!

I’m so pleased to bring your attention to an article by Catherine A. Sanderson, PhD, Professor of Psychology at Amherst College. Dr. Sanderson studies the power of positive thinking on our health and is the author of The Positive Shift: Mastering Mindset to Improve Happiness, Health, and Longevity. Dr. Sanderson offers a synopsis of her book on page 10. I hope you will take the time to read about the potential impact of a positive mindset.

As you probably already know, there are so many components to a cancer diagnosis. Every aspect of your life can feel different, affected, and at the same time, precious. Recognizing the far-reaching impact of a diagnosis, we present articles spanning many aspects of life; from clinical information regarding immunotherapy to the positive impact of support groups. From understanding your diagnosis to nutrition myths. From financial issues to sexual health. It is our sincere hope that this issue of CONQUER is a powerful resource to you, lifts your spirits, and encourages you to take the time to nurture yourself.

On behalf of all of us at CONQUER, we wish you a nurtured and empowered survivorship.
