Our organization of over 8,900 members was founded in May 2009 to provide a network for all professionals involved and interested in patient navigation and survivorship care services to better manage the complexities of the cancer care treatment continuum for their patients. We view our organization as one consisting of “professional patient advocates” and, to that end, we support and serve our members.

Melanoma Awareness: Safe from the Sun Walk and Run Event

Catherine M. Poole
President/Founder, Melanoma International Foundation
Glenmoore, PA
Melanoma survivor

Safe from the Sun began in 2002 as a small group walking in the King of Prussia Mall to bring melanoma awareness to our community. The event quickly grew and expanded to Villanova University, with satellite events in Seattle, WA, and Phoenix, AZ.

With an attendance of more than 2,500 participants, we now hold the largest melanoma awareness event in the world, which takes place at the 90-acre Wilson Farm Park in Wayne, PA.

The Melanoma International Foundation is privileged to host this event, and it gives us special joy to see so many friends and families come together to support and honor loved ones who are currently receiving treatment for melanoma, or those they have lost as a result of this cancer.

Join Our Teams!

Safe from the Sun has many components, including a 2-mile walk, a 5K run, a kids’ dash, and an awards ceremony.

We welcome all participants, but the heart of Safe from the Sun is the teams. Each year, we average about 100 teams, ranging in size from 5 people to 150 people. These teams are made up of friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors who come together to support or to remember someone special in their lives. Over the years, our teams have developed friendships, and we look forward to seeing each other every year on this amazing day.

Free Skin Cancer Screening

What really brings us pride is our free skin cancer screening. The public is welcome to attend this free screening with no obligation to attend the event itself. Some of the most community-minded dermatologists in the area give their valuable time to perform these skin checks, for which we are very grateful.

Over the years, a number of people have had their melanoma found early as a result of the screenings, which makes every bit of effort worth it.

All the proceeds from Safe from the Sun benefit the Melanoma International Foundation’s Patient Services Program, which provides one-on-one personalized support to patients who are facing a diagnosis of melanoma, as well as to their loved ones.

Patient Support Services

From providing help in understanding the pathology (causes and effects) of melanoma to offering scholarships to travel to clinical trials, our patient navigator seeks to understand and to overcome the obstacles standing between patients and their best treatment possible.

It is an exciting time in the melanoma landscape, with new treatments being developed all the time. For the first time in decades, options are available for patients to have longer, better lives, and it is our goal to help them do just that.
