What Is a Nicho?
A nicho is a type of Central and South American folk art that evolved from the Roman Catholic tradition of painting patron saints on wood or tin. These small 3-dimensional boxes honor a central theme important to the artist. Nichos blend elements of popular culture, spirituality, and Roman Catholicism and are usually made with striking colors from craft supplies and household items.
“I constructed this nicho during my recurrence of breast cancer—which was more aggressive than the first time—with the guidance and support of my art therapist. Through Chemo Fog, I show that the natural world helps to bring clarity and hope.”
